This was the coolest thing ever! The fish ladders are structures along side dams (in this case, it is the Bonneville dam on the Columbia river, at the Oregon/Washington border) that help the fish spawn upstream. Naturally, the fish (such as salmon) would swim upstream from the ocean to their home creek to lay their eggs (spawn). But, because dams have been built along the river, the fish can't get through. So, these ladders (really like graduated stairs) allow them to bypass the damn and make it up stream. Down below the water level, there are observation windows to watch the hundreds and thousands of fish swim by. Above water, you can watch them jump up the step. Kath and I could have watched for hours-- very cool!
